I've been taking photographs for as long as I can remember. Why? I might say that it's a way of sharing my vision of the world with others and that it helps me to maintain a connection with the great outdoors. Well, all that is true, but in all honesty I primarily take photographs because I enjoy it.

There are certain kinds of images that I return to again and again. My photography is mainly concerned with the landscape, both natural and man-made. But my aim isn't primarily to capture “big views”, impressive as they often are, but rather to show the “designs” hidden in nature.

Whatever the subject, design, symmetry and balance - in varying degrees - are all elements of the images I aim to create. I find the square aspect ratio of the 6x6cm camera system I use is ideal for this kind of work.

I live in Devon in south-west England, and I'm lucky to have some beautiful coastal and upland scenery close to my home. Whilst I photograph these subjects as much as I can, I personally find that travelling to fresh locations is an essential source of inspiration. So you will find images from the length and breadth of Britain on this website - from Cornwall to the Hebrides, and from Wales to Northumberland.

My work has been published in several books, national newspapers and magazines, and parts of my image collection are marketed by the international stock libraries Alamy and Photographers Direct. I'm also very pleased to be able to say that two of my photographs were Commended in the 2009 Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

Oh, and did I mention I like taking pictures?

I hope you enjoy your visit to VISION & LIGHT!

Equipment
Although choice of equipment is a lot less important than many people believe, I have to admit that, like most photographers (at least of the male variety), I like cameras. I also like knowing what kit other photographers carry in their bags, so for the enjoyment of all you gearheads out there, here is my current kit list:
  • Hasselblad 503CW medium format SLR camera
  • 50 mm, 80 mm, 150 mm lenses + 2x teleconverter
  • Extension tubes
  • Hasselblad XPan panoramic 35mm camera + 45mm lens
  • Nikon FE2 35nn SLR camera
  • Fuji Velvia 50, Fuji Acros and Ilford Delta 100 films
  • Nikon D200 digital SLR camera with 18-70 mm and 80-200mm lenses
  • LEE neutral density grad filters, 81-series warm-up filters, circular polariser
